SCRIPTURE: Psalms 150:2,6
“[2]Praise Him for His mighty acts; Praise Him according to His excellent greatness! [6]Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!”
REFLECTIONS
Our meditation today is relatively straightforward but extremely important – Praise the LORD! Throughout the Psalms, which we have endeavored to meditate on for eighteen weeks now, the power of God to create, preserve, deliver, redeem, and restore is glaring and persuasive. God’s attributes – Omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience, self-existence, imminence, immortality, mercy, compassion, grace, love, etc. —saturate all five books of the Psalter.
The psalms reveal a God passionate about humankind’s salvation and well-being—a father and mother figure concerned about their children’s welfare. Instructions on keeping and upholding God’s word and obeying His commandments abound. God’s relationship with humankind epitomizes all relationships and reflects the one within the Godhead.
Psalms 150, the last of the Psalms and the Hallel Psalms, titled: “Let All Things Praise the LORD,” is a beautiful composition. It highlights some essentials in praising God regarding where, why, how, and who. This piece of poem implores all creatures to praise God. We are the ones who can respond reasonably to this call. The psalm begins and ends with Hallelujah – “Praise the LORD.” But there are ten exhortations to praise Him in those six verses of the chapter. Verse 1 entreats, “Praise the Lord! Praise God in His sanctuary; Praise Him in His mighty firmament!” But verse 2 provides the rationale for praising God: “Praise Him for His mighty acts; Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!” Who God is (His excellent greatness) and what He has done (His mighty acts) constitute the reasons for praising Him. Can we genuinely overlook the great things God has done in our lives individually? Impossible!
Moses attested in Deuteronomy 3:24 – “‘O Lord God, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your mighty hand, for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do anything like Your works and Your mighty deeds?” No one deserves praise except God. Never take any of God’s favors for granted; express appreciation. When He takes your breath away, you are nothing; praise Him for what you have accomplished in life. Psalms 150:3-5 lists seven instruments for His praise, implying perfect praise. If God is paramount in our thoughts, if He is first on our priority list, and if we consider Him the best in our lives, we will spontaneously praise Him. When we contemplate our salvation and what Christ has done for lost humanity, we will always praise God. The final verse exhorts, “[6]Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!” Beloved, you have more reasons and evidence to praise God than you are doing now. Praise the LORD.
