The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has issued a stern warning to headteachers across the country who turn away students duly placed in their schools or demand unapproved fees from parents. He cautioned that such conduct will attract strict disciplinary and legal sanctions.
Speaking at the 32nd Annual Conference of Directors of Education in Sunyani, Bono Region, Hon. Iddrisu expressed grave concern over reports indicating that some school heads were obstructing the enrollment of first-year students and exploiting parents financially.
He described these acts as unacceptable, stressing that they undermine government’s vision of providing free, fair, and quality education for all Ghanaian children.
“All students placed in schools through the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) must be admitted without discrimination or any additional financial demands,” the Minister emphasized.
He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to upholding discipline, transparency, and accountability within the education sector, adding that headteachers found culpable would face sanctions in line with administrative and legal procedures.
Hon. Iddrisu also tasked Directors of Education to step up monitoring efforts and ensure full compliance with Ministry guidelines to facilitate a smooth enrollment process nationwide.
He concluded by reiterating that the government will not tolerate any practice that jeopardizes access to education, particularly for children from vulnerable backgrounds, and called for collective responsibility in safeguarding the integrity of the educational system.
