Ghana Water Opens Weija Dam Spill Gates-1

Date:

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced the controlled spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam following a rise in water levels above the maximum operating threshold of 48 feet.
In a statement issued by the company, management explained that all spill gates of the dam have been opened to release excess water in a controlled manner to protect the structural integrity and safety of the facility.
According to GWL, controlled spillage is routinely carried out during the rainy season whenever water levels exceed 45 feet in order to reduce pressure on the dam and prevent possible disasters.
The company further disclosed that the Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecast additional torrential rains upstream, which are expected to increase inflows into the dam.
As a result, the spillage exercise is expected to continue until water levels return to a safe operating range. GWL indicated that the exercise could continue for several months depending on rainfall intensity and inflow volumes. Read Also: Afriyie Ankrah Calls for National Renewal
Management has therefore urged residents living along the downstream course of the river to immediately evacuate from vulnerable areas to avoid possible flooding and safeguard lives and property.
The statement also revealed that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and various District Assemblies are preparing to remove structures and other obstructions that impede the free flow of water into the sea. http://dailydemocratnewsonline.com
Ghana Water Limited appealed to the relevant authorities to carry out these measures as quickly as possible to minimize flooding risks and protect affected communities.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the safety of the dam infrastructure while ensuring public safety at all times.
GWL further called on the public to cooperate fully with all emergency directives and advisories issued by state institutions throughout the spillage period.
