Gender Minister Pushes Affirmative Action Implementation

Date:

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has called on the media to play a leading role in ensuring the successful implementation of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 (Act 1121), describing the legislation as a major step towards achieving gender equality and inclusive national development in Ghana.
Speaking during a media engagement in Accra on the implementation of the Act, the Minister said the law was not just symbolic, but a deliberate national commitment to addressing historical gender imbalances and increasing women’s participation in leadership and decision-making at all levels.
According to her, the Act establishes legally binding targets aimed at improving gender balance in governance and leadership while introducing enforcement mechanisms to ensure accountability in both public and private institutions. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey stressed that the success of the law would depend largely on public awareness, acceptance, and active participation, adding that the media remained a critical stakeholder in shaping public understanding and driving social transformation.
“The media is not merely a conduit for information; it is a pillar of democratic governance,” she stated. “When you report accurately and consistently on gender equality issues, you do more than inform — you build consensus, challenge discrimination, and create the cultural conditions necessary for lasting change.” http://www.ghanaweb.com
She urged journalists and media practitioners to use their platforms to promote inclusion, fairness, and gender-sensitive reporting while amplifying the voices of women and girls across the country.
The Minister further noted that the Ministry would continue to collaborate with media organizations to ensure sustained nationwide sensitization on the provisions of the Act, especially within underserved communities.
Delivering the welcome address on behalf of the Chief Director of the Ministry, Dr. Marian W. A. Kpakpah described the passage of the Affirmative Action Act in 2024 as a historic milestone in Ghana’s pursuit of social justice and equal opportunity.
She explained that the Act seeks to increase women’s participation in decision-making to at least 30 percent by 2026, with the long-term objective of achieving full gender parity by 2034.
Dr. Kpakpah emphasized that the media, as the fourth estate of governance, had an indispensable responsibility to shape public discourse, challenge stereotypes, and hold institutions accountable in the implementation process.
Participants at the engagement were encouraged to support the national agenda by promoting inclusive storytelling and sustained public education on gender equity issues.
The engagement formed part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to deepen collaboration with the media and strengthen public understanding of the Affirmative Action Act as Ghana pushes toward greater gender equality and social inclusion.
