MOVE FROM TALK TO ACTION ON CLIMATE ISSUES – LANDS MINISTER TO COUNTRIES

Date:

The Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, has called on countries across the globe, to move from talk to action on climate issues. This came up at a boardroom discussion on COP28 and a just energy transition, on Wednesday, 14th June, 2023.

He emphasized the need for developed countries, which have historically been, and continue to be, the major emitters of geeenhouse gases, to step up and honour their climate promises.

At the invitation of BloombergNEF, the Minister also participated in the Bloomberg New Economy Africa Conference, held at Marrakech, Morocco, on the consequential issue of the exploitation and management of Africa’s green minerals.

He reiterated the commitment of President Akufo-Addo to ensure that Ghana adds value to the green minerals. He stressed that “Under no circumstances will Ghana export its lithium and other green minerals in their raw state”.

He indicated that even though the country may not be able to retain the entire value of the these minerals in the country due to the complexities involved, as much as possible, a significant proportion of the value chain will be retained in Ghana. Adding that Ghanaians must benefit from the 7 trillion US Dollars value of the full industry rather than the 11 billion US Dollars for the mere mining of these minerals.

On the sidelines of the event, he held a bilateral meeting with Strive Masiyiwa, an African business giant whose group of companies are revolutionizing the digital space of Africa.

Hon. Jinapor also granted an interview to Bloomberg and the Morocco News Agency, on opportunities for investment in Ghana’s mining industry, talking on policy for the green minerals and Ghana-Morocco relations.
