Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, has cautioned that while gold remains central to Ghana’s economic stability, mining must always be carried out responsibly and sustainably.
Speaking at a donation ceremony in Accra where GoldBod presented GH¢5 million and five Hilux vehicles to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in support of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), Mr. Gyamfi stressed the need for collective responsibility.
“We cannot leave this fight to the Minister alone. All state agencies and citizens must support the effort. We want gold, but we want gold that is sourced responsibly,” he emphasized.
He noted that the donation marked the beginning of a series of interventions by GoldBod to promote sustainable mining practices, including support for the government’s cooperative mining scheme, which aims to license, train, and regulate small-scale miners.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, received the donation and praised GoldBod for its commitment to sustainable mining. He highlighted government’s resolve to restore the environment, fast-track licensing processes, and ensure that illegal mining is tackled decisively.
“This ceremony shows clearly that the Gold Board is not just focused on buying gold but is also committed to sustainable mining and responsible sourcing. Together, we will turn our forests green and our waters blue,” Hon. Buah said.
The support is expected to strengthen NAIMOS’s capacity as Ghana intensifies its crackdown on illegal mining while safeguarding its natural resources for future generations.
