The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to immediately deploy emergency response teams to flood-hit communities following heavy rains that inundated several parts of the region.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Minister expressed deep concern over the flooding and sympathised with residents who have suffered losses, displacement and other hardships.
“My heart goes out to all individuals and families who have been affected by this unfortunate incident. I sincerely sympathise with those who have suffered losses, displacement and other hardships,” she said.
Hon. Ocloo said the safety and well-being of residents remain the Regional Coordinating Council’s top priority, stressing that all MMDCEs have been instructed to work closely with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), emergency response teams and technical officers to intensify rescue operations, evacuate trapped persons where necessary, assess affected communities and provide immediate relief. She emphasised that all MMDCEs are expected to remain actively engaged until the flood situation is brought under control.
The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, she noted, is coordinating with NADMO, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service and other emergency agencies to safeguard lives and property.
With the Ghana Meteorological Agency forecasting more rainfall, the Minister urged residents to exercise extreme caution by avoiding unnecessary travel, staying away from flood-prone areas, drains and fast-flowing floodwaters, and remaining indoors where possible. http://dailydemocratnewsonline.com
She also appealed to parents and guardians to ensure the safety of their children, warning against allowing them to play in floodwaters or attempt to cross flooded roads and drains.
Residents in need of emergency assistance have been advised to contact NADMO through its emergency telephone lines or WhatsApp platform.
Hon. Ocloo further appealed to the public to cooperate with emergency personnel and comply with all safety directives as authorities continue efforts to manage the situation.
She assured affected residents that the Regional Coordinating Council, together with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and emergency response agencies, would continue working tirelessly to protect lives, support affected communities and provide the necessary assistance during the challenging period.
