NDC Honors Rawlings With Headquarters Rename

Date:

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to immortalise its founder, former President Jerry John Rawlings, by naming the party’s national headquarters after him as part of activities marking the 2026 NEC Month celebrations.
Addressing a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Adabraka, Accra, the General Secretary of the NDC, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, said the decision forms part of efforts to honour the enduring legacy, sacrifice and democratic ideals of the late former President.
According to him, the month of June has officially been designated by the party as “NEC Month,” a period set aside annually for reflection, remembrance, recommitment and renewal of the values that shaped the formation of the NDC.
Mr. Kwetey explained that this year’s observance, which begins on May 15, carries deep historical significance as it traces the political events that eventually gave birth to the June 4 uprising, the PNDC era and later the formation of the NDC in 1992. He described Rawlings as a courageous and selfless leader whose commitment to accountability, patriotism, sacrifice and social justice inspired generations of Ghanaians and laid the moral foundation of the party.
“President Rawlings devoted his life to the empowerment of ordinary Ghanaians and consistently placed the people above himself. His legacy continues to inspire generations within the NDC and beyond,” he stated.
As part of the climax of the celebrations on June 22, which marks the 79th birthday anniversary of the late former President, the party will collaborate with the Jerry John Rawlings Foundation to organise a Founders’ Day event at the party headquarters.
The ceremony will include the unveiling of a bust of Rawlings and the official naming of the NDC headquarters in his honour, in recognition of what the party describes as his immense contribution to Ghana’s democratic development and the growth of the NDC.
The event will also feature lectures, exhibitions and interactive discussions aimed at educating especially the youth on the ideological foundations, values and historical journey of the party. http://www.ghanaweb.com
Mr. Kwetey used the occasion to remind party members that the NDC was founded on principles of sacrifice, honesty, personal responsibility and people-centred governance, warning against turning the party into a vehicle for personal enrichment.
He stressed that the ideals of the June 4 uprising and the NDC tradition remain relevant to Ghana’s democratic growth and national reset agenda, adding that true political leadership must always place the interest of the people above individual ambition.
