Korle Gonno Central SDA Church Lays Foundation Stone to Mark 50th Anniversary

Date:

The Korle Gonno Central Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church has laid its foundation stone to commemorate the church’s upcoming 50th anniversary celebration, symbolizing both a spiritual milestone and the beginning of a new chapter in its rich history. The event took place on Saturday, October 18, 2025, with prayers, dedication, and a renewed commitment to building upon Christ, the true foundation of the Church.
The foundation stone, which comes once in the life of every church, serves as a lasting reminder that Jesus Christ is the cornerstone upon which the church stands, both spiritually and physically. The ceremony also signifies the official beginning of construction works toward enhancing the church’s infrastructure and spiritual mission.
Prayers and blessings were offered for divine protection, provision, and growth of the congregation. The solemn prayer was led by Pastor Dr. Solomon Okoe Trebri Hammond, President of the Accra City Conference of the SDA Church, who also unveiled the plaque to the glory of God. His sermon centered on Christ as the cornerstone of the church, emphasizing that all activities, teachings, and faith practices must be anchored in Him.
The foundation stone was officially laid by Pastor Dr. Chris Annan-Nunoo, Executive Secretary of the Southern Ghana Union Conference (SGUC) and Church Pastor, supported by Pastor Dr. Solomon Okoe Trebri Hammond (President, Accra City Conference), Pastor Dr. Emmanuel Gaizer (Executive Secretary, Accra City Conference), Elder Charles Kobina Anoo Quaye (Treasurer, Accra City Conference), and Pastor Stephen Damptey (District Pastor).
The ceremony drew inspiration from the church’s humble beginnings. The roots of the Korle Gonno SDA Church trace back to 1962, when members of the Hansen Road SDA Church, residing across the Korle Lagoon, attempted to establish a branch Sabbath School under the leadership of Elder Otu Apreku, Deacon Thomas Ateh Nunoo, and Teacher James Mensah Okai.
In 1973, the church launched a “Share Your Faith” campaign and later hosted youth evangelistic meetings that paved the way for the “Keys to Health and Happiness Lectures” led by American evangelists Dr. John Staples and Dr. Sherman Nagel from Pacific Union College, USA. The six-week campaign, held at Argonauts Park (now Indafa Park) near the Korle Bu Hospital, culminated in the baptism of 56 new members on October 25, 1975, marking the official birth of the Korle Gonno SDA Church.
Finding a place of worship was initially a challenge until Madam Gertrude Naa Shika Otoo, proprietor of the Unity Day Care Centre, offered her premises along Old Winneba Road for worship. Under Pastor B. C. B. Debrah, who took office in late 1975, the congregation was finally organized into a full-fledged church on March 20, 1976, becoming the fifth organized SDA Church in Accra.
As the church approaches its golden jubilee, the foundation stone stands as a symbol of faith, perseverance, and unity, reminding members of the enduring grace that has guided them through the decades.
