GSA Launches Tough Nationwide Standards Enforcement Drive

Date:

The Greater Accra Regional Manager of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Mr. Clement Kobati, has announced a renewed nationwide enforcement drive aimed at protecting consumers, promoting fair trade and ensuring strict compliance with national standards across all sectors of the economy.
Speaking during a media engagement in Accra, Mr. Kobati said the GSA had entered a new phase of bold regulatory action backed by strong political commitment to fully implement laws that had remained largely unenforced for years.
He said the Authority’s renewed focus would eliminate unsafe practices, close regulatory loopholes and prevent Ghana from becoming a destination for substandard products that endanger lives and the environment.
According to him, the GSA’s mandate is to protect consumers while creating a fair trading environment where businesses operate on a level playing field and Ghanaian products meet international standards for both local consumption and export.
Mr. Kobati noted that road crashes and environmental degradation remain major national concerns, stressing that the Authority’s interventions are designed to safeguard lives, particularly the country’s active workforce, by ensuring that only safe and quality products enter the market.
He called on the media to play a leading role in educating the public on the importance of standards and compliance, describing journalists as indispensable partners in the Authority’s mission to build a safer and more competitive economy. As part of the engagement, Mr. Kobati highlighted the GSA’s ongoing inspection of weighing scales used by transport operators to ensure transparency in luggage charges. He revealed that inspections at several transport terminals showed many operators either lacked weighing scales or were using equipment that had not been verified by the Authority.
He, however, commended the State Transport Corporation (STC) for complying with the regulations after its weighing equipment successfully passed calibration tests conducted by GSA officials.
Mr. Kobati explained that the inspection exercise is mandated by the Ghana Standards Authority Act, which empowers the Authority to inspect and verify all weighing and measuring instruments used for trade, health, safety and environmental protection.
He stressed that the exercise is intended to protect both transport operators and passengers by ensuring accurate measurements, preventing overcharging and eliminating unfair commercial practices.
While operators are currently being given the opportunity to comply with the law, Mr. Kobati warned that future inspections would attract strict sanctions, including substantial financial penalties for businesses that fail to meet the required standards. https://theexclusiveonline.com/
He disclosed that the GSA would soon hold stakeholder consultations with transport operators to address legitimate concerns and strengthen cooperation as the nationwide compliance exercise expands to other sectors of the economy.
Mr. Kobati urged businesses to embrace the Authority’s renewed enforcement efforts, insisting that the GSA’s ongoing reset would ensure higher standards, stronger consumer confidence and a safer marketplace for all Ghanaians.
