The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has officially commenced the licensing of gold trade service providers across the country, effective Wednesday, April 23, 2025. The move is part of efforts to restructure, regulate and enhance transparency within the gold trading sector for optimal national benefit.
In a press statement issued by the Media Relations Officer, Prince Kwame Minkah, GoldBod indicated that individuals aged 18 and above, as well as fully-owned Ghanaian companies, are eligible to apply either online via goldbod.gov.gh or in person at the GoldBod office in Accra.
The categories of licenses currently available include Aggregator, Self-financing Aggregator, Buyer (Tier 1), and Buyer (Tier 2). Additional licenses — including those for refining, smelting, fabrication, storage, and transportation — will be open for application starting July 2025.
GoldBod emphasized the importance of understanding and accepting all terms and conditions before applying. It also reminded the public that foreigners must exit the local gold trading space by April 30, 2025, unless applying for off-taker status. Violators will face penalties under the Ghana GoldBod Act, 2025 (Act 1140).
Furthermore, GoldBod reaffirmed that all gold trading transactions must be conducted at the Bank of Ghana’s official reference rate. The organization aims to collaborate closely with stakeholders to create a more efficient, transparent, and nationally beneficial gold trade framework.
