The State of Palestine has issued an urgent appeal to the international community over what it describes as a dangerous escalation by Israeli occupation authorities, following the adoption of legislation that permits the imposition of the death penalty on Palestinian detainees.
The appeal was made at a press conference in Ghana by a Councillor at the Palestinian Embassy, Mr. Ahmed Abudalfa, who warned that the move marks a significant shift in longstanding policies affecting Palestinians in detention. He stressed that the law institutionalizes practices that undermine human rights and due process.
In a strongly worded statement, the Embassy noted that the legislation should not be viewed in isolation but as part of a broader framework that entrenches discrimination and legitimizes unlawful actions against Palestinians.
According to Mr. Abudalfa, the development comes against the backdrop of documented concerns by international human rights organizations over conditions faced by Palestinian detainees. These concerns include allegations of mistreatment, denial of medical care, and other forms of abuse within detention facilities. Read Also: Government Launches Labour Exchange Programme for Germany
The Embassy argued that the law violates key provisions of international humanitarian and human rights law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, both of which safeguard the right to life and fair trial standards. It further expressed concern over provisions within the legislation that reportedly allow for expedited executions and limit avenues for appeal.
Describing the law as discriminatory, Mr. Abudalfa contended that it applies exclusively to Palestinians, raising concerns about equality before the law and fairness within the judicial system. He also questioned the independence of military courts where many Palestinian detainees are tried, citing repeated concerns raised by international bodies.
The issue, the Embassy noted, forms part of broader tensions across the occupied Palestinian territories, including the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, where security operations and detention practices continue to draw global attention. http://dailydemocratnewsonline.com
While acknowledging international reactions condemning the legislation, Mr. Abudalfa stressed that statements alone are insufficient. He called for concrete actions, including diplomatic pressure, accountability measures, and protection for detainees.
The appeal further urged governments, regional bodies such as the African Union, and civil society organizations to take a more active role in addressing the issue and ensuring adherence to international law.
Reaffirming its position, the Palestinian side stated that it will continue to pursue its quest for self-determination and statehood, insisting that such measures will not deter its long-standing aspirations.
