DVLA Tests New RFID Plates Ahead of Rollout-1

Date:

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has commenced the pilot phase of new Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-enabled number plates as part of efforts to strengthen vehicle identification, improve security and modernise Ghana’s vehicle registration system.
The initiative is expected to introduce a more secure, technology-driven and tamper-resistant system for identifying and tracking registered vehicles.
According to the DVLA, the pilot exercise will enable it to assess the effectiveness of the new number plates, operational processes and related requirements before the system is rolled out nationwide.
The initiative follows the passage of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2519), and forms part of the Authority’s broader programme to improve the integrity, security and efficiency of vehicle registration and identification. Under the new system, the RFID-enabled number plates will feature several security and identification elements designed to enhance the authenticity and traceability of vehicles.
These include the words “REPUBLIC OF GHANA” prominently displayed at the top of the plate, the Ghana flag at the top-right corner, a biennial renewal sticker ring at the top-left corner, the region of registration at the bottom and a watermark of the map of Ghana at the centre.
The registration details have also been redesigned. The registration number will be followed by four letters, with the first two representing the Registration Centre Code and the subsequent two serving as a Random Identification Mark that will not follow a sequential pattern.
A major change under the new system is that the year of registration will no longer appear on the number plate.
The current pilot involves a selected number of vehicles and is intended to help the DVLA test and refine the new technology and associated processes ahead of full implementation.
The Authority says it intends to officially begin issuing the new RFID-enabled number plates in January 2027, starting with unregistered vehicles.
The DVLA will subsequently announce the modalities and commencement date for the re-registration of vehicles that are already registered.
The introduction of the RFID-enabled plates forms part of the DVLA’s digitisation efforts and is expected to contribute to enhanced vehicle security, improved revenue protection and greater efficiency in vehicle registration and identification. https://dailydemocratnewsonline.com/
The Authority has urged vehicle owners and the motoring public to take note of the upcoming changes, assuring them that detailed information will be provided ahead of each stage of the rollout.
