WaterAid Ghana has congratulated President John Dramani Mahama on his electoral victory and inauguration as President of Ghana, emphasizing the need to prioritize water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) during his tenure.
In an open letter, the organization highlighted the disparity in access to basic WASH services, particularly in rural areas, where the lack of clean water and sanitation significantly impacts women, girls, and vulnerable populations.
Citing the Ghana Statistical Service’s 2021 report, WaterAid noted that while 87.7% of Ghanaians have access to basic water services, only 23.5% have access to improved sanitation. The letter also referenced the devastating 2024 cholera outbreak, underscoring the urgency of addressing public health risks tied to inadequate WASH facilities.
WaterAid called for sustainable funding of $1.7 million annually to meet Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), compared to the current allocation of GHS 300,000-500,000. It also urged the government to consolidate WASH directorates under one ministry for efficiency and effectiveness.
The organization stressed that improving WASH services would enhance health care, particularly maternal and child health, and bolster resilience against climate change impacts.
