The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga (MP), formally handed over 20 waste collection tricycles on behalf of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Thursday, 5 November 2026. The Assembly procured the tricycles with its internally generated funds and is distributing one to each of its 20 electoral areas.
Hon. Ayariga commended the AMA for using local revenue to improve sanitation and encouraged other metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to follow its example. He also urged residents to dispose of household refuse properly and keep the areas around their homes clean, stressing that sanitation is a shared responsibility.
The Minister said the government was working with development partners to establish additional landfill sites and was investing in waste transfer stations and vehicles to improve refuse collection and removal.
Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey said the Assembly bought the tricycles in response to requests from assembly members for equipment to tackle sanitation problems in their communities. The tricycles are reserved for sanitation work, including community clean-up exercises.
The AMA’s Presiding Member and Assembly Member for Amamomo, Musa Ziyad, said having a tricycle in each electoral area would help assembly members respond more quickly when residents reported accumulated refuse or drains that needed desilting. He said the initiative supports President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of a cleaner, greener Accra.
