Kwadwo Atta Apeakorang, Founder and President of the non-governmental organization Save The Nation For Future Leaders, has requested an opportunity to address Ghana’s Parliament on strategies to combat the ongoing menace of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
In his request, Apeakorang emphasizes the severe impact galamsey has had on the nation’s environment, particularly its water bodies and farmlands.
His organization, dedicated to promoting a cleaner and more sustainable ecosystem, has been at the forefront of the anti-galamsey fight through community mobilization, public awareness campaigns, and collaboration with various stakeholders, including Parliament.
“I have witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of galamsey on our environment,” Apeakorang stated. He believes that addressing Parliament in his local language would provide an opportunity to present innovative and actionable solutions that are deeply rooted in community involvement, enhanced policy enforcement, and sustainable alternatives for those involved in the illegal activity.
Apeakorang has petitioned Parliament several times in the past, urging them to take stronger actions to combat galamsey. In his upcoming address, he plans to propose a comprehensive strategy that integrates community-driven solutions, effective law enforcement, and sustainable development options, all aimed at eradicating galamsey in Ghana.
He has also submitted copies of newspaper publications by Save The Nation For Future Leaders to Parliament for their review, hoping that this will further highlight the urgency of the situation and the need for swift action.
